9 Reasons Why Fall Is the Best Season
I know… I know. Nearly every American girl you meet is going to try to convince you that Pumpkin Spiced Latte season is the best season…
…but just to preface this article: although I’m 21, American, and don’t like pumpkin spiced lattes (though I do like pretty much pumpkin spiced anything else), I think that fall is the best season for reasons beyond the infamous Starbucks drink.
Though I’m still young, self-growth is something I value, and I feel that Autumn (arguably, more so than Spring) challenges reflection and change in a way that the other seasons don’t.
Here are a few reasons why I (and many others) love the Fall so much:
1. The Weather is Perfect
I’m channeling my inner Goldie-locks here. Autumn in the DMV is when the humidity finally goes back into hibernation, and yet, it’s still the sweet spot before I’m freezing from the minute I jump out of bed in the morning in the the middle of January.
It’s just right.
Just nice, crisp, cool, refreshing air. Autumn air is like… taking a deep breath in, and then exhaling and relieving yourself of all toxins.
2. The Scenery
Fall colors are absolutely beautiful. Yeah, Spring is all pink and fluffy and innocent; Winter has its untouched white blankets of snow; Summer with its beaches and sand between your toes…
…but Fall…
…the green and red and orange and yellow all colliding to amount to warm miles of excessive, massive parades of colors… it’s gorgeous. Everything in autumn suddenly looks, somehow, simultaneously authentic and magical.
P.S. You should really be reading up on my posts on New England in the Fall…
3. The Meaning
On the subject of those beautiful colors… it’s an artistic soul’s duty to realize how juxtaposed this beauty really is. Those leaves are actually dying, and letting go… no matter how beautiful they are.
Fall creates a nostalgic atmosphere that somehow dually reminds you of the past: of what cannot be changed, but all that can be changed… it’s an opportunity to let dead things go.
4. The Scents
The smells of pumpkin, nutmeg, clove, cinnamon… Bath & Body Works candles… and fall air, in general. That crisp, cool, spicy air of burnt wood and fallen leaves is irreplaceable.
5. The Holidays & Traditions
Hellooo…. Halloween? Giving little kids candy in their adorable costumes and Disney Channel’s movies airing annually each year?
Thanksgiving with all the food and (hopefully) memorable family times... trips to the Pumpkin Patch…and Jewish holidays like Rosh Hashanah with that back to school feeling and Sukkot with beautiful sukkahs...
… Fall has the best holidays, if you ask me.
6. The Fashion
It’s boot season! Finally!
The boots, skirts, comfy clothes… and it's still socially acceptable to not wear jeans (which I, at times, firmly believe are leg prisons) yet, since the weather is still in transition.
7. The Food
If you read my blog, you already know how much I love to bake. I will never complain about making my pumpkin pie energy balls, snicker’s cheesecake bars, cinnamon-spiced cookies, and much more once September rolls around each year.
I’m not going to lie. I’m a fan of all things pumpkin: alongside candy corn, cozying up to warm drinks like hot cocoa, Thanksgiving food like stuffing, cranberries, cornbread, and mashed potatoes… it's all so warm and comforting.
Comfort food = life.
P.S. Apple cider too.
P.S.S. PUMPKIN. FREAKING. PIE.
8. The Leaves
The sweet, childhood delight of jumping into a pile of leaves, or stepping on a leaf and hearing the magical crunching sound is… something.
As a kid, my mom said that she would rake a massive pile of leaves, and that I would jump into them… proceeding to then ruin all of her hard work.
When I was working at a pre-school part time three years ago… I taught all my (then) three-year-olds how to do the same. I couldn’t believe that so many of them had never done it. We went back to the classroom picking leaves out of our hair…
… it was awesome.
9. It’s a Fresh Start that Isn’t Too Hard of a Reset
Fall is a fresh start… but not as dramatic as the New Year or a celebrating another birthday.
Growing up, September in many ways has felt like the start of the new year over January. I was raised Jewish, and the new year usually falls around the same time you go back to school. As a kid, going back to school often feels more like the new year than January… which is smack in the middle of the school year. Back to school season feels like a much more apparent reset button.
I really believe that the last quarter of the year feels the longest… and for good reason. With all of the close & cozy holidays, new endeavors before the year closes out…instead of everything disappearing, it’s a time of year where the people around you, all seem to come together.
It’s a new beginning that doesn’t disregard the past… and that, is precisely what I like about Fall most of all.
